🧠 THINKING TOOL

Reverse Your Position

What if you had to argue the opposite of what you currently believe?

🔄

Try arguing against yourself.

Strong opinions can become stronger when we only look for information that supports them. This tool forces a temporary perspective switch.

↓
REVERSE THE POSITION “I should NOT buy this car.”

Your task isn’t to change your mind. It’s to find the strongest reasons your current position could be wrong.

1 State your real position.
2 Build the strongest case against it.
3 See what survives the challenge.

No judgment. No “correct” political or personal position. The goal is better thinking.

THE IMPORTANT PART

Remember:

Being willing to change your mind is not weakness. It is what makes an opinion yours rather than something you inherited.

Don’t ask only: “Why am I right?” Also ask: “What would I have to discover to realize I’m wrong?”

What is the Reverse Your Position tool?

Reverse Your Position is a critical thinking exercise that asks you to temporarily argue against your own position. By exploring the strongest arguments for the opposite view, you can identify assumptions, weaknesses and overlooked information.

Why should you argue against your own opinion?

When we strongly believe something, we naturally tend to notice information that supports our existing position. Deliberately considering the opposite argument can help reveal information or perspectives that we might otherwise ignore.

What is the goal of this exercise?

The goal is not to make you change your mind.

The goal is to test how well your position holds up when you deliberately challenge it. You may finish the exercise with the same opinion, a modified opinion or a completely different conclusion.

How does Reverse Your Position work?

The exercise encourages you to: reconsider your level of confidence, clearly state your current position, identify the reasons supporting it, temporarily adopt the opposite position, construct the strongest argument against your original view, identify evidence you may have overlooked.

Steelman the opposing position

Instead of creating a weak version of the opposing argument, try to construct the strongest reasonable version of it. This can provide a more useful test of your own reasoning and reduce the risk of dismissing an opposing view simply because you disagree with it.

FAQ

Does Reverse Your Position try to change my opinion?

No. The tool does not promote a particular conclusion. Its purpose is to help you examine your own reasoning by temporarily considering the opposite position.

What if I still agree with my original position?

That’s completely fine. The goal is not to change your mind. If you can consider strong counterarguments and still support your original position, you may have greater confidence in your conclusion.

Does this tool determine which side is correct?

No. It is a thinking exercise, not a fact-checking system. Important claims should still be evaluated using reliable evidence and appropriate sources.
